Young girls need female role models if we want to close the gender gap in science and engineering. This event is the chance for middle school girls to meet face-to-face with real women in science, ask questions about their careers, and imagine themselves as scientists, too. Millions of years ago, a massive magma chamber cooled below ground near Atlanta, never erupting through to the surface. Now, we call it Stone Mountain. Join GSU Geosciences on a hike to explore this unique granite dome. You can start the hikes or swing by for a hands-on learning session at the Historical and Environmental Education Center where the geologists will explore the history of this notable natural landmark. Not Just Newts: Behind the Scenes with the Amphibian Foundation | Sunday, March 8th, 2020 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Atlanta is home to a unique nonprofit dedicated to the conservation and research of amphibians amidst a global population decline. In 2016, the Amphibian Foundation formed to focus on conserving two of Georgia’s most imperiled species (Gopher Frog and Flatwoods Salamander). Since then has begun working on other native and globally endangered amphibians. Closed to the public, this is a chance to see the conservation collections and meet Foundation staff working hard to save these vital and sensitive animals from extinction. Register here!

Come on out to Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve in Decatur and witness wildlife with regional experts from the Amphibian Foundation. Become ‘citizen scientists’ and perform an amphibian ‘bioblitz’ inventory of the preserve documenting salamanders and frogs in one of the last strongholds for amphibians inside of the perimeter! Escape the Room with Thymio | Saturday, March 7th, 2020 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Take your first steps into robotics with Thymio! In a fun escape game, you will learn about the basic behaviors, functions, and sensors of a robot called Thymio and help him find his way to his destination! The escape activity will be led by a team from the EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) in Switzerland where the robot has been developed. This is your chance to discover the universe of robots and learn a robot’s language!

The next time your friends stop by, your home will be “lit.” Smart home technologies are right at your fingertips at our Code the Glow event, where you will create your own automated programmed lighting system using Arduino. Arduino is a powerful, yet accessible, programmable microcontroller board that can be used for many automated projects. GSU Professor of Physics, Mathes Dayananda, will teach you how to use Arduino to program an LED light strip, which you can take home to impress your friends.

The Guardian called the competition “The Pulitzer of the New Instrument World,” and The New York Times described the “special, otherworldly sound that you can feel permeating your soul” which became the hallmark of the competition. Fast Company explained how Guthman’s “Futuristic Instruments will change how we make music,” and Atlanta Magazine suggests that “at the Guthman Competition, innovative instruments just might predict the future of music.”

Science is art! Join us for an engaging activity exploring where science and art meet. Why is surface tension important? Yoga doesn’t just have to be about “zen” – it’s about connecting with one’s mind and body; connecting with pain, happiness, peace or lack thereof. It’s Only Natural: Examining the Art of Scientific Illustration | Wednesday, March 18th 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join Fernbank Science Center as they debut a new exhibit with featured speaker, Gene Wright, UGA Chair of Scientific Illustration. The Story Collider brings true, personal stories about science to life. At this live show, you’ll hear scientists tell heartwarming (and heartbreaking) stories about their failures, successes, and everything in between, and you’ll also hear from people who haven’t had a formal connection to science in years. Wildflower Walk | Saturday, March 7th 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Presented by Fernbank Museum

Join a Fernbank scientist to explore Fernbank Forest, a 65-acre mature mixed-hardwood forest located in the heart of metro Atlanta. You’ll get to explore the diversity of native plants and wildflowers and learn to identify them by their leaves and flowers.

This tour is for ages 8 and up. Children under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Call 404.929.6400 to reserve your spot. Space is limited to 30 people, so make your reservation early. Champion Tree Walk | Sunday. March 8th 10:00 am – 11:30 am

Each year, Trees Atlanta teams with partners to search for some of the oldest, heartiest, and most beautiful trees our city has to offer. These fine trees are compiled into a list of nationally-recognized “Champion Trees.” In this walk with Fernbank ecologist Eli Dickerson, we’ll dive into the process of selecting Champion Trees. Rock n’ Walk | Sunday, March 8th 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

Presented by Georgia State University

Millions of years ago, a massive magma chamber cooled below ground near Atlanta, never erupting through to the surface. Now, we call it Stone Mountain. Join GSU Geosciences on a hike to explore this unique granite dome. You can start the hikes or swing by for a hands-on learning session at the Historical and Environmental Education Center where the geologists will explore the history of this notable natural landmark. You’ll also be able to ‘walk’ a Giant Traveling Map of Georgia, engage in activities with rock and mineral specimens, and explore other natural landscapes using Google Cardboard VR as you make your way up the mountain. We Eat Trash: The Science Behind Worm Composting | Saturday, March 14th 10:00 am – 11:30 am

Presented by UGA Extension Clayton County, Clayton County Government

What happens to that moldy package of strawberries you throw away once they’re in your trash can? What about your vegetable scraps from cooking? They eventually break down or decompose. Worms love to eat food like this! Join UGA Extension as we learn about using our household food waste to feed worms that can turn our trash into rich compost for our gardens. Grab your phone and get ready to hike up Arabia Mountain for a scavenger hunt that includes geocaching, identifying unique species, and finding geologic features beneath your feet! Stop by the nature center to claim your scavenger hunt card before you get started and consider joining a guided hike to learn about plants, insects, and more as you explore the landscape. Learn how to use the iNaturalist, Rockd, and Geocaching apps to record your observations and share your discoveries with the global community. Learn more about this free event here. 

Splash into Stream Science | Sunday, March 15th 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Presented by GSU Geosciences, Fulton County Public Works Project, WET Adopt-a-Stream

Examine the world of water in your own backyard by catching and studying bugs that reveal the health of a local stream in southwestern Atlanta. Test water quality and learn how changing environmental conditions can affect the livelihood of habitats and how that relates to human activities. 

Join in games and engage in laboratory and field science at different stations next to the creek, or jump in and “get your feet wet” to participate in data collection in the water! Make sure you wear closed-toed footwear, and ideally, waterproof options (e.g., waders, rain boots) if you plan on going into the creek to collect water samples.
