It seems all anyone can talk about is the pandemic and how it has shifted our daily lives. We’ve gathered up a selection of healthcare and COVID-focused events during the 2021 Atlanta Science Festival to learn more about this historic pandemic.
COVID-19 Vaccines and Disparities in Black Communities: What You Need to Know | Saturday. March 13th at 10:00 AM

Please join Dr. Zanthia Wiley, Emory Infectious Diseases specialist and Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship at Emory University Hospital Midtown for a conversation about COVID-19 Vaccines. Dr. Wiley will discuss COVID-19 vaccine truths, myths, and the importance of vaccination. She will also discuss the disproportionate effect that COVID-19 is having in minority communities. Dr. Wiley will answer questions submitted directly from the audience.
Health Hacks Coding Hackathon | Saturday. March 13th (Multiple Dates) at 12:00 PM
Presented by: Citizen Science HD and Girls Who Code
Calling all middle and high school girls who code! Immerse yourself in the foundations of coding and its application to improve health in the community. You’ll have help from expert mentors to spark inspiration and assist with coding through this virtual interactive workshop.
This year, our theme will be healthcare, and all girls will be prepared with the foundations needed to start a project through various workshops hosted by our amazing mentors! There will be 2 divisions, beginner (uses Scratch) and intermediate (uses RStudio). No coding experience required.
Note: The Hackathon will take place over the week from 3/13-3/21. Participants will need to commit on 3/13, 3/14, and 3/21 to gain the needed knowledge via workshops and attend our closing ceremony where we will announce the winners! 3/15-3/20 will consist of optional office hours where mentors are available to help any participants that require any assistance or advice. Vaccine Real Talk | Thursday, March 18th at 7:00 PM

Join us for an evening exploring the truth of the COVID vaccines – how they work and how to best combat misinformation around them. We’ll have a panel of local experts share their thoughts in a conversation moderated by science writer Maryn McKenna. Our panel will include Colleen S. Kraft, MD,(Emory University), Risa Palm, PhD (Georgia State University), Brittaney Bethea, MPH (Morehouse School of Medicine), and Breanna Lathrop, DNP (Good Samaritan Health Center).

At this online story hour with three Atlanta tellers, you’ll hear from scientists tell heartwarming (and heartbreaking) stories about their failures, successes, and everything in between, and you’ll also hear from people who haven’t had a formal connection to science in years. This show will feature stories connected to tellers’ personal trials with COVID-19. Science is a part of all of our lives and The Story Collider brings chemists, comedians, actors, neuroscientists, writers, and physicists alike onto the “stage” to tell their (true) stories.
