The Science Behind Historic Preservation

Presented by Historic Oakland Foundation

Join Historic Oakland Foundation's Director of Preservation for a behind-the-scenes look at how historic materials are cared for in a cemetery. Ever wonder why some old headstones look like they're melting? Or what bricks and mortar are made of? We will discuss all of this and more- all while walking around Atlanta's most famous graveyard.

This event has another occurrence on Saturday, March 15.

Getting There

Parking Info

Parking for visitors to Oakland Cemetery is available in the paved lot at 342 Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. SE. The entrance to the lot is directly across the street from DAS BBQ. More information available here.

Alternative Transportation

Take MARTA train to Georgia State Station. Walk 0.1 miles south on Piedmont Ave SE, turn left on Oakland Ave SE, and Oakland Cemetery will be on the right.

Accessibility

Oakland Cemetery is not up to ADA accessibility standards. The property has rough walkways with uneven brick that can be difficult to traverse and some steps on the walkways. If steps are an issue, typically you can find a path to walk around them, but it is difficult to avoid the uneven pathways. During ASF walks, guests will be walking approximately 1-1.5 miles total and asked to climb small sets of stairs.
