Get Creative with the Atlanta Science Festival’s Sciku Contest

ATLANTA – Nov. 19, 2015 – Calling all poetic science enthusiasts for the Atlanta Science Festival’s (ASF) first ever Sciku contest! The ASF team is calling for submissions of original Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-themed haikus (or scikus) every week from now until the 2016 festival. Each week, one winner will receive a free ASF T-shirt, and her/his poem will be featured on the ASF Facebook and Twitter feeds that Sunday.

The contest just opened for its first round of submissions on November 1 with the first winner being announced on November 8. Those interested should also be sure to keep an eye out through the weeks with Sciku topic prompts, which will be broadcast via Twitter from @AtlSciFest. During the festival, one overall winner will be chosen from the weekly winners to receive a prize during the Festival’s Exploration Expo on March 26, 2016.

“Sciku is a fun and easy way to express your love of science,” said Festival co-founder Jordan Rose.  “Haikus can be funny, clever, instructive, critical, poignant, or all of the above. Our Sciku contest lets people of all ages express themselves about science through a beautiful and accessible art form.”

In addition, the contest will culminate in a set of Sciku events in schools across Atlanta with a final outdoor installation hosted by the Guerilla Haiku Movement at the Exploration Expo. The Expo exhibit, which aims to foster 1,000 Scikus in one day, will be sponsored by the Atlanta Science Festival and Out of Hand Theater.

So, poets, scientists, adults, children, and anyone in between, get your families and friends involved and start rolling those Scikus in!
